One very common reason why children or seniors are hurt in their own homes is falling. Falling can be made a lot worse, however, if it happens on stairs. Thousands die each year from falling down stairs in the US alone. You should keep your stairs safe by paying attention to these points:

If there is carpet on your stairs, it needs to be firmly attached to keep it from being a stumbling risk. If you can’t make it secure, ripping off the carpet completely might actually reveal beautiful wood stairs. If not, you could always install a flooring material that is not going to pose a trip hazard.

Railings need to be firmly attached to the wall. If someone were to fall and grab on to it, you don’t want it to rip out of the wall. They should also be free of splinters, since a splinter in the hand at the wrong time could cause someone to flinch back and let go.
