Trees are a beautiful part of our surroundings, so it’s not surprising that many homeowners enjoy having them as part of their landscaping. But, can problems arise if these trees are situated too close to the home? Here is a few of the potential issues that trees can cause to a building:
- One problem that can arise is that leaves and branches falling from trees can collect in gutters resulting is them becoming blocked. This creates a buildup of water or ice which in turn will start to cause water to enter the home.
- Another hazard is If a tree is old or has been damaged in some way. Tree limbs will weaken causing them to fall. This is not only a danger to human life, but they can also fall on the home or even power and communication lines.
- It is widely known that tree roots can damage foundations. This can happen in a few ways, for example, if a foundation has any cracks in it, these roots can find their way in. If tree roots are large enough, they can reach under the house causing the foundation to lift.
- Fire is another potential hazard. If trees are situated too close to a property, it could pose a possible fire risk. Small animals like rodents and also insects will find it easier to enter a home if there are trees very close.
What can you do If you are worried about a tree that is close to your property? Every so often give the tree a check over to see the kind of condition it’s in. You could even use binoculars to examine the higher areas. If you notice that the tree is decaying or is dead, its best to have the tree removed so as to prevent it becoming a danger. Do not try removing the tree’s roots though as this is the part of the tree that keeps it sturdy and secure.
